Recipe: Pear Apple Awesomesauce

Have I ever told you how much I love apple sauce? Or how much it reminds me of being a kid, devouring the homemade applesauce my mother would reward us with on special occasions? Or how sad I was when I was told no more cinnamon {frelling food intolerances} because that meant no more applesauce-omeness?

Well, I do. And it does. And I really was.

Last summer I came up with a great twist on my favorite homemade treat: Strawberry Applesauce. This time around, the surprise ingredient was pear. There were so many loverly looking pears to choose from at the store.

The Pear Applesauce was beyond good paired with some sweet potato kugel. It was fantabulous eaten warm. And even totally awesome straight from the fridge.

The only debate: Pear or strawberry. Which is better?

I’ll let you be the judge.

Pear Applesauce

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 apples, any variety or mix thereof
  • water
  • 1-2 pears
  • 1/8  to 1/4 cup raw sugar

Directions:

  1. Peel, core, and chop apples into small chunks. Doesn’t need to be precise.
  2. Place apples into pan and fill halfway up apples with water.
  3. Peel, core, and chop pear and add to apples.
  4. Turn stove to high and bring to a boil.
  5. Lower heat and simmer until apples are tender. Approximately 30 minutes.
  6. Once apples are tender, take a potato masher and mash apples until desired texture is achieved.
  7. Add sugar and stir.
  8. Serve hot or cold.

Notes:

  • Use as many apples and pears as you have.
  • Add sugar {or your favorite sweetener} to your liking. The more pears you use, the sweeter the applesauce will be.
  • Use your favorite apples. And use a variety! Our batch had granny smith, yellow delicious, red delicious, and gala apples.

This recipe is vegetarian and vegan. It is also nightshade free, dairy free, gluten free, wheat free, soy free, cinnamon free, egg free, and contains no msg
