Today marks Day 1 of a Crazy Sexy Detox. Or, at least, it’s supposed to.
The juicer I bought over the weekend? Broken.
The awesomepants Cuisinart Blender that we’ve had for 4+ years? Broke this morning.
The refrigerator? Stuffed to the gills with leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables in preparation for the green juices, green smoothies, and alkaline foods that comprise the Crazy Sexy Diet.
I’m beginning to think that the universe is trying to tell me that it’s not time to do this right now. Which would have been really nice to know before spending all of that money at the grocery store on fresh greens, veggies, and fruit.
Sabotage: The art of making sure it doesn’t happen.
All of this has gotten me thinking about a funny little thing called sabotage. And how often we do this to ourselves, knowingly or unknowingly, to avoid making changes. Or doing something scary. Or being successful with loosing weight, exercising regularly and meditating daily.
My talk about the detox:
- I’m not sure I can do it for that long.
- It’s cold out, and with all of the juicing and cooling foods that I’ll be eating, I won’t survive this cold weather we’re having in Pittsburgh.
- I don’t want to go to a 100% raw diet.
- I can’t wrap my head around cooking alkaline meals, particularly when everything I’ve read has said that cooking changes the alkalinity.
- Juicing is scary, strange and I don’t like greens.
- I’m going to be miserable.
Is it any wonder that the juicer was broken or that the Cuisinart crapped out on me this morning?
I totally wanted to give up on the detox and just say “Screw It.” But then I realized that this is exactly what the sabotage wanted me to do.
Feel the fear and do it anyway.
So how do you tell the self-sabotage to get packing?
Awareness is key.
You cannot even begin to make changes if you aren’t aware that there is a problem.
This morning, it was like the world was conspiring against me. This afternoon? It’s the self-talk, self-doubt, and fear talking. I’m doing it anyway.
Another example: a client of mine wanted to loose weight. Whenever she got close to reaching a specific weight goal, she would find a way to sabotage herself and end the diet. The weight would come back on, and she would be miserable.
Once she realized why she was sabotaging herself, she was able put the necessary supports in place to address what was really happening. And it had nothing to do with the weight, the diet, or the food.
Break it down.
Often times we sabotage ourselves when it feels like our task is insurmountable. Take the detox, for instance. Just the thought of cutting out sugar and carbs, and eating salads for every meal makes me cranky.
Adding in one green drink a day {smoothie or juice}, on the other hand, gets me excited. Working up to the bigger goal of going gluten free, not eating sugar, or having salads all day long begins to feel more manageable when I see what I am already doing.
A fellow detoxer is having a hard time giving up coffee. Going from 14 cups of coffee a day to nothing is a bit drastic {and hard on the body}. But cutting out one cup of coffee every few days? That has been much more manageable. And has also helped her to know that she can do the 21-day detox. On her own schedule.
Stop letting that mean old voice in your head win.
We all have internal banter. The problem is, that internal banter {aka the voice in your head} is often really negative. And it says things like “you’re not good enough” or “you’ll never succeed, so why bother.”
Fortunately, these statements are not based in fact, they are based in fear.
With the detox, I’m afraid of not feeling well. I’m afraid of restricting my foods even more. I’m afraid of being hungry. And I’m afraid I will fail.
The key is to feel the fear, and do it anyway. {Awareness + Action!}
Get support.
This might sound like a no-brainer, but it’s huge. Talking it out with people helps you to understand where you are in the process, stay accountable to achieve your goals, and talk about what is holding you back.
We have a Crazy Sexy Detox Facebook group set up for this very reason.
It’s also the reason why people who have coaches {health coaches, business coaches, life coaches} are more successful than those who try to do it alone.
If you have insight or experiences to share, please leave a comment below. I’d love to hear your experiences with self-sabotage, and how you felt the fear and did it anyway!
