Veggie Burgers Take Over the World

black bean burger

As a sometimes Reluctant Vegetarian, I have to admit that hamburgers are one of the things that I often miss most. The Hubster too. Though we differ at which kind of burger that is. {Me: a burger with ketchup and pickles, The Hubster: a cheeseburger from Tessaro’s}

And if you ask The Hubster, it was a burger that helped him make the switch to a plant-based diet without a hint of regret. A lentil burger to be precise.

Here are our favorite recipes for veggie burgers:

Now you might notice that there are only two recipes listed. And that’s because we love them so much that we really don’t stray. Ever. Accept for maybe the occasional Bean Cake or ten.

We also occasionally go out to eat {shocking, I know}. These are some of our favorite places to get veggie burgers out:

  • Houston’s {I’m not sure what they do, but those are some of the best veggie burgers. Next to mine, of course, But, unfortunately, they are not nightshade free.}
  • Double Wide Grill {They make a decent lentil burger, one that I can actually eat!}

What is your favorite recipe for veggie burgers? Where do you get the best burgers in your area?

    I also think Rock Bottom has a decent “handcrafted” veggie burger (whatever that means). I need to explore more of Pgh’s veg offerings!

    I think once you get a good veggie burger recipe, it’s hard to stray!

    In Seattle, we have a place called “Blue Moon Burgers” with a great veggie burger, and black bean burger as well – though the black bean has quite a bit of bite to it, I learned the hard way!

    But, the best veggie burgers I’ve bought in a restaurant come from Burger Me in Truckee, CA. Don’t know how they do it, but they’re awesome!

    They’re the most popular recipe on my site for a reason. I rarely order them out now because mine are better, but I had some awesome portobello sliders at West Coast Tavern in San Diego last week. The walnut spread was amazing and soon to be knocked off in my kitchen.

    Had the black bean burger at North Country Brewing in Slippery Rock, PA, today, and it is a favorite. They make it fresh, use organic products and produce and other products for restaurant and making beer that have less than 100 miles to travel to brewery, so very green and yummy. The burger comes with a chili sauce on it, but I have been substituting for the aioli that they put on their veggie cakes! Go there often! Its worth it!

    I actually really like the Dr. Prager’s California burgers from Trader Joe’s. Full of veges, so good. My 14 month old loves them!

    I wish I could say that there is a place near me that makes an incredible veggie burger, but there isn’t. I just make my own and keep them in the freezer. I have more of a technique than a recipe too. I have a tendency to change things up almost every time. I do love using lentils though.

    I’ve been enjoying the vegie burgers at Over The Bar on the South Side, although that may be just as much for their “sandwich creations” as the burgers themselves. Vegie burger + peanut butter + pickles + cheese = delicious!
