When Follow Your Arrow by Kasey Musgraves first came out, I liked it. I thought it was punchy and playful and incredibly wise. It was also a great political statement at a time when the legalization of marijuana and gay marriage were at the forefront.
And then the song started getting less airtime, both on the radio waves and in my own home.
During a panel discussion I was a part of last week, I was asked to share parting words of wisdom for women looking to step into a leadership role or even out into the world of entrepreneurship.
The first thing that came to mind was this song, and this line:
Follow your arrow wherever it points.
It’s okay to be different; to step off the beaten path and create your own. In fact, the most influential leaders out there do just that. They follow their own path and blaze a new one in the process.
When I got home, I realized that this song perfectly sums up my intention for the year. I plan to follow my arrow; to find the things that pique my interest and follow them down one glorious rabbit hole after another.
Turns out the thing I needed to hear the most was also the thing that others needed to hear in that moment.
Synchronicity at it’s finest.
