The Babe’s absolute favorite show on the planet is Sofia the First.

She and her daddy bond over it like there’s no tomorrow.

I happened to catch the tail end of the episode she was watching this morning, featuring a mother-daughter witch duo. Mrs. Wicked Witch (the mother) is all about hexing people and creating mayhem while her daughter, Lucinda the Good Witch, spends her day undoing all of her mother’s spells by pointing her wand and saying, UNHEX.

About an hour after watching it, The Babe and I went for a walk around the neighborhood. We came across a large stick on the ground and The Babe asked if she could hold it. I broke off a piece, and jokingly called it her magic wand when I handed it over to her.

For the duration of the walk, The Babe swung her wand in the air and yelled UNHEX at everything she saw.

Trees, houses, kids playing outside.

Every step brought with it another UNHEX until she had cleared away all of the evil around her. And that got me thinking. How amazing would it be to have this ability in the real world. To clear up all of the evil in the world with a simple wave of a wand and an UNHEX.

Judge rules that Kesha has to continue working with alleged abuser. UNHEX.

4 out of 5 (white) men avoid jail after beating a (black) man unconscious in Pittsburgh. UNHEX.

Pittsburgh woman killed because she said no to unwanted sexual advances. UNHEX.

Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was killed by Police in Ferguson, MO. UNHEX.

Yet another school shooting reported today. UNHEX.

Crime. Abuse. Racism. Bigotry. Misogyny. Xenophobia. UNHEX, UNHEX, UNHEX.

Perhaps I’m being incredibly naive and misguided to wish that such a thing be possible, but I simply cannot wrap my brain around how so much evil in this world can exist unchecked.

Please tell me that I’m not alone in feeling this way.
